Headline: President McAleese visits school. Posted: May 13, 2011
President Mary McAleese visited St. Brendan's on Friday, May 12th, to mark the 150th anniversary of the school. There was a palpable air of excitement in the school all day. On arrival, the president went to the canteen where she unveiled a collage of artwork marking the sesquicentenary. She then went to the general purpose area where she saw presentations on aspects of school life - from sport to school tours to carol singing for charity. She continued on to the study hall which was full of students, teachers (past and present) and local dignitaries. The school choir played the presidential salute upon her arrival. Mr. Pat Fleming and Mr. Jim O'Brien then addressed the audience, before Niall Crowley (6th year) sang "Bring him home", accompanied by the school choir. The President then took to the stand. She spoke wonderfully about St. Brendan and the history of the school before mentioning how Mr. Paul Barden was good friends with her young brother in Rostrevor, Co.Down. She also spoke humorously about how her husband Martin had shared accommodation with former Sem man Moss Keane. Her speech was wonderfully received and it was a very proud day for the school
